Jane McPherson is a qualified clinical social worker and health professional with special training in issues related to sex and relationships.

Thoughts and emotions influence the ways in which we relate to our partners and ourselves. Disruptive patterns of behaviour may develop that could result in misunderstanding, hurt and pain.

“Relationships become painful when power struggles reign," says Jane. “Differences in sexual desire are one of the single most common sex problems that couples experience.

“Women often grow up in a culture of misogyny, shame and inequality. Men may grow up in a culture of ‘don’t say anything, don’t talk about anything, deal with your own problems, just take charge and do!’

“People learn to avoid emotional issues for a number of different reasons. They may have experienced trauma in their past and such experiences may inhibit their ability to work through these issues which, of course, just keep coming.

“Sweeping issues under the carpet is not the answer to developing your sexuality and intimacy. Accepting uncertainty and vulnerability will help grow your inner strength and have the relationship you desire.”
